This is because the developers never intended for the NPCs to actually interact with the creatures in the game. Mitzi couldn't possibly have been stung, and she was powerless to do anything to assist the player. But the fact that she stood in the exact spot where the wasps landed was a terrible choice given the circumstances.
The good news is that in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, getting better after being stung by a wasp is as easy as taking the prescribed medication. When a helpful villager sees that the player is in poor condition, there is a chance that they will offer the player some free aid out of compassion. In spite of the fact that Mitzi commented on the sting, she did not offer the player anything, which added further insult to injury.
