Apple's digital car key feature may come in handy in unlocking several BMW models soon. In a recent newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claims that Hyundai and the luxury Genesis badge will support Apple CarKey "by summer." Which version will have this option? But it's worth noting that the trim level of the Ioniq 5 and other Hyundai cars have NFC for the digital key. (currently proprietary)

While remote lock control has been available via smartphones for quite some time, CarKey (and its Android equivalent) treats your phone like a real key. You just need to bring your phone or Apple Watch to the door handle to unlock it. And you can also put your phone in a designated area to start the car. People with an ultra-wideband iPhone (such as iPhone 11 and later) can put their phone in their pocket when turning on and starting the car.

If the leak is correct Apple's move could greatly expand the audience base for digital car keys. You don't have to buy one from a single high-end brand to consider it. The deal also suggests that a possible tussle for an EV partnership isn't enough to deter Apple and Hyundai from exploring the CarKey team.
