How to perform the Speed Flip in Rocket League

  • The Speed Flip is a mechanic in Rocket League that has quickly gained popularity as a necessary skill to master in order to keep up with the best players at the highest levels of competition or on the professional scene. In this guide, players will learn how to perform the Speed Flip as well as how to Flip Cancel; this is a necessary step in order to comprehend the mechanic's setup.

    What exactly is a Speed Flip?
    A Speed Flip is a more efficient way of flipping forward, and it will largely replace your standard front, diagonal, and side flips. It combines several inputs borrowed from the Flip Cancel mechanic in order to be performed.

    Why would you use a Speed Flip?
    When the car is facing forward, the player can only boost for a short period of time (while the buy rocket league items is facing forward). This is the general strategy for basic kick-offs. Boosting while the car is pointing upward, downward, or backward will reduce your speed and change your trajectory.

    Second, when flipping forward to hit the ball, the player should aim to hit the ball with the tip of their nose. This necessitates precise timing and distance judgment. If this is done incorrectly, the player may unintentionally make contact with the underside of the Rocket League credits (known as a belly flop), which will bring their car's momentum to a halt.

    The Speed Flip allows a player to launch forwards at the ball with a flip while maintaining the nose forward the entire time.     How to Accelerate Flip Flip Cancelling

    The Speed Flip mechanic is derived from the Flip Cancel mechanic. This must be accomplished by the players first. Flip Cancel is a technique in which the player performs a Front Flip and then cancels the animation, as the name suggests. This is done in order to keep the car's nose pointing forward. Players can use the following inputs to cancel a Flip:

    A single jump is made with the left stick. Down (6 o'clock) in order to have the car look slightly upwards
    Use your second jump with the left stick Up (12 o'clock) to initiate a Front Flip.
    After the Front Flip starts, immediately pull the left stick down again (6 o'clock) and hold it there.

    When the Front Flip animation is cancelled correctly, the player's car should stop rotating before pointing directly downwards. This is dependent on how high their car was facing during step one. If players use low sensitivity settings, their car may begin to turn or barrel roll. If this is the case, they can use Air Roll to manually complete the roll and recover with their wheels pointing down.

    Flipping at high speed
    The comparison of a standard Side Flip with an Air Roll assisted Side Flip helps to demonstrate what a Speed Flip will look like and why Air Roll is important in this mechanic.

    The first example is a standard Side Flip. The car barrel rolls, but it falls just short of the full 360-degree turn. The same is true for a forward diagonal left flip that is performed in the same direction.
    The second example is a Side Flip assisted by an Air Roll. Throughout the animation, we'll be holding Air Roll (square) and the left stick in the direction of the flip. The addition of manual Air Roll allows a player to complete the full 360-degree rotation in a smooth manner.
    Players can successfully speed flip by slightly adjusting the Flip Cancel input directions and combining them with the Air Roll assisted Side Flip (to the left). Players can perform a right-side Speed Flip by mirroring the actions of the left stick to the right.

    With the left stick pointing Down-left (7 o'clock) and the air roll button held down, cancel the flip animation immediately.
    Continue to hold down-left on the left stick while maintaining control of Air Roll. This will assist the car through the final portion of the rotation.

    Getting the Speed Flip just right
    There are a few more changes that have been made to make the Speed Flip more smooth and applicable to a wider range of situations.

    Although it is not required in all situations, many players will begin their Speed Flip with a Power Slide. This is especially important when starting from the kick-off because initiating a forward diagonal left flip while fully gripping the ground can potentially push the car two to three car widths to the side. This can cause a player's kick-off approach to be delayed or cause them to miss a pre-flip challenge on the ball.

    With Powerslide, the Rocket League credits can release its grip on the ground and the forward diagonal left flip will not push the car as far to the side as it would otherwise. Additionally, players can initially offset their Rocket League items buy by Powersliding diagonally in the opposite direction of their Speed Flip direction. This is done so that if the car does push sideways, it is technically traveling diagonally forwards and the boost pushes the Cheap Rocket League Items back into the middle (and onto the line).
    When performing a left-sided Speed Flip, a player Powerslides to the right in order to offset the direction.
    Hold Powerslide and the left stick in the Up-right (1 o'clock direction) position.
    After a very slight turn, perform the standard left side speed flip.

    Players will be performing a Square, X, X, Square button combo (Powerslide – Jump – Flip – Air Roll) while timing the left stick movements in the manner described above. As they become more proficient at this, it will appear as though they are performing a large anti-clockwise semi-circle rotation. However, the skip between steps three and four is still required in order to ensure that the Flip Cancel is properly registered.

    Suggestions for additional information
    Here are some additional tips and drills for improving Speed Flips and increasing utility around the pitch.

    Powerslide to the side
    In addition, players can hold the Powerslide button down until the car makes contact with the ground. Players will be able to Powerslide out of the Speed Flip and keep their momentum even if their Rocket League Trading Prices isn't facing directly forwards. This is typically used in kick-offs, but it can also be used to chain together multiple Speed Flips as a recovery method.

    Transfers of ownership and control
    When approaching the wall, players can use a Speed Flip to move in the direction of the wall. When done correctly, players can gain speed from the flip and then land on the wall at a 270-degree angle through the Speed Flip. They can use this drill to improve their transfer skills.

    To transfer, perform a speed flip close to a wall.
    Jump off the wall and dave-dash back to the ground.
    On the ground, perform a second speed flip.
    Players can use this drill to hit the ball near the wall, transfer it, and then maintain their momentum to continue chasing the ball up field. When transferring, combining Speed Flips and wave-dashes is the most effective way to chase in {anchor}.

    This is referred to as the Speed Flip Test.
