Every rider dreams of a long-distance motorcycle trip. For beginners, however, there are many things to consider, including necessary precautions and the gear to bring. So, what should a novice rider pack for a long journey? Let’s take a look.
A complete set of gear allows riders to handle harsh weather conditions or unexpected emergencies, such as breakdowns or accidents.
Motorcycle Tool Kit – Including standard socket set, spark plug wrench, spare spark plugs, small nuts, or clips.
Chain Lubricant – You can use old R4 or grease as a substitute. Bring 3 extra cans of R4 engine oil and a plastic fuel container for refills on the road.
Rain Gear – Avoid cheap sets. Make sure rain pants have glued seams at the crotch, as stitched seams often leak. Good rain gear may include shoe covers, which are very practical in rainy weather. Can also be used for warmth when necessary. Bring a large bike lock, anti-theft device, tow rope, and spare motorcycle and padlock keys.
Tire Repair Kit – Includes tubeless sealant in separate cans for front and rear tires, spare inner tube, and tire inflator.
Riding Gear – Travel jacket and pants (made of water-resistant material), with waist support for long rides. Jacket should include shoulder, elbow, and back protectors; pants should have knee protectors and long enough legs to cover ankles. Other protective gear is optional.
Helmet – Preferably a full-face travel or off-road helmet. Face guard recommended; a scarf or buff can help protect the face.
Casual Wear – A set of lightweight, quick-dry clothes for off-bike use (jackets, pants, etc.).
Warm Layers – Inner travel jacket, thermal leggings, insulated knee pads, or handlebar mitts.
Underwear & Socks – Bring at least one set of underwear and four pairs of outdoor socks. Additional items can be bought on the road if necessary.
Optional Items – Sunglasses (UV protection), survival whistle.
Motorcycle Shoes – Protective and breathable; also bring waterproof hiking shoes (thicker for cold weather) and sports sandals (can double as slippers).
Optional – Hat (for photos).
Gloves – Two pairs of off-road gloves (one for regular use, one for rainy conditions), and an extra pair of thick gloves for snow or cold weather.
Spare Motorcycle Bulbs – One front headlight and one rear taillight; 7A batteries (several), 5A batteries (several).
Flashlight / Headlamp – Recommended for outdoor use; headlamp is practical for nighttime repairs, while a smaller flashlight can fit in a waist bag.
Windproof Lighter – If you don’t have a lighter, cotton soaked in fuel or high-voltage spark can be used to start a fire.
Water Bottle & Holder – Available at outdoor or cycling stores; can be mounted on the left or right side of the handlebars.
